DronesDirect has adapted the DJI phantom drone to become a dog walking device, allowing you to take your dog for a walk completely handsfree.

The company has added a retractable leash to the drone and using the same collision avoidance technology used in driverless cars, you can be sure your pooch won’t go crashing into a tree or other obstacle.

This isn’t the first pet-themed drone DronesDirect has developed. A cat drone apparently proved popular too, although cats are less likely to co-operate with a leash.

“Following the success of our Cat Drone, we didn’t feel it was fair to forget our canine friends,” said Mark Kelly, marketing manager at the site told the Daily Mail. “The launch of the innovative Dog Drone is a great alternative for pet owners who lead busy lives by giving the option of hands-free walking.”

The Dog Drone can walk your dog for up to 30 minutes using integrated GPS to follow the route you chose. You can check the drone cameras on your smartphone whenever you wish, so you can make sure the dog hasn’t come loose.

“This handy piece of tech means dogs have a companion by their side whilst getting the exercise and enjoying the fresh outdoor air they so desperately need on a daily basis,”Kelly added. “The DJI Phantom 4 Dog Drone encompasses all the latest technology features with some exclusive added benefits to suit man’s best friend on their walkies. This is a one-of-a-kind canine companion, which we are delighted to offer to all dog lovers.”

The idea is that you can jut sit in the park, check into Facebook, eat a picnic or do anything else while the drone does the hard work for you. When it’s time for you to leave the park, the drone will bring your dog back to you so you don’t even have to lift a foot or battle with your pooch when it really doesn’t want to leave the space.

The standard version of the DJI Phantom 4 costs £959, while the dog walking version will set you back £1,000. Is your laziness really worth such a high price?
